Abstract

This issue offers a critical reflection on the contemporary university and its role in the production of knowledge within a context shaped by the instrumentalization of learning. It questions public discourses—produced by intellectuals, bureaucrats, and marketing strategists—that appropriate the meaning of the university and reduce it to a technical apparatus focused on efficiency and profitability. In response, the author reclaims Ortega y Gasset’s notion of commitment as the foundation of every institution and proposes to rethink the university as a space for building connections and shared thinking. The global health crisis has intensified debates around educational virtuality, raising questions about its capacity to foster genuine human relationships and collective knowledge. Education, therefore, is presented as a political and ethical pact with reality. Finally, the text highlights the importance of critically revisiting the concepts of identity and interculturality, emphasizing their polysemic nature and the social, political, and educational tensions arising from their instrumental use. The university, in this sense, must reaffirm itself as a space of encounter, dialogue, and social transformation, rather than as a market-oriented institution detached from its humanistic mission.
