Abstract

This article offers a systematic classification of coplas, with the aim of ordering and systematizing their diversity. The classification is based on an atomistic conception of copla units, differentiating between categories, systems, and groups of coplas. Three levels of classification are defined: the category, which groups unstructured units; the system, which includes interactive units; and the group, which is characterized by a more closely connected interaction. This typology is applied to coplas based on their metric and thematic characteristics, such as epic, lyrical, and satirical, among others. The importance of a precise classification for the analysis of the popular songbook is highlighted, and a thematic order is proposed that ranges from romantic to political coplas. In addition, the relationship between language, phonology, and grammar in coplas is explored, emphasizing their function as a means of communication and cultural expression.
