Cabuya fiber work in the Province of Imbabura

Abstract

This article explores the tradition and current state of cabuya fiber work in the Province of Imbabura, Ecuador. Cabuya, obtained from the Fourcroya andina plant, has been a fundamental raw material since pre-Hispanic times, used in the manufacture of bags, ropes, and textiles. Despite its historical and cultural importance, cabuya work faces significant challenges due to market changes and competition with new materials. Today, the fiber is mainly used in the production of textiles for agricultural packaging and traditional items. The study highlights current practices in key regions such as Antonio Ante, Urcuquí, and Cotacachi, and analyzes the difficulties faced by producers, including price instability and dependence on intermediaries. Strategies are proposed to improve workshop efficiency, support artisans, and encourage product diversification, to strengthen the local economy and preserve this artisan tradition.
