Abstract

The joint commitment of the Otavalo Institute of Anthropology (IOA) and the University of Otavalo (UO) to anthropological research has given rise to this new issue of Sarance, which features topics that, taken as a whole, fall within the scope of contemporary social and cultural anthropology. The contributions presented in the various articles authored by faculty and researchers focus on the study of living culture and social development, systems of symbolic expression, and, at times, productive aspects of the communities of Ecuador’s Northern Sierra. These topics are examined from local or regional perspectives and reflect a phase of rearticulation and strengthening of the distinctive characteristics that have marked the IOA’s trajectory—a process driven by the vigorous research activity of the UO.
