Abstract

Among the many dimensions that must be considered in the study of humankind, there is one that can never be sufficiently emphasized: the dimension corresponding to historical events, whose paths—some luminous, most tortuous—must be understood as essential for achieving, insofar as it is possible, a full comprehension of the present condition of both humanity and society.

For this reason, history is not merely a science of the past, nor is engaging with it a matter of mere curiosity. As the Latins said, it is the teacher of life. For understanding, history functions as a kind of axial knowledge around which all other human dimensions may be articulated—none of which can have true meaning apart from their temporal interconnection.
