Abstract

In June 1992, the Otavalo Institute of Anthropology organized a National Seminar on Popular Culture, with the participation of various Ecuadorian institutions dedicated to the study and/or dissemination of this broad field of research. We wish to highlight the participation of the University of Nariño, from Pasto, Colombia, an institution that expressed its strong desire to integrate studies on aspects common to the peoples of the Colombia-Ecuador border region. The content of this journal reflects the topics presented at the Seminar: theories of popular culture, ethnoliterature, handicrafts, festivals, music, and popular theater. Participants represented the following institutions: Inter-American Center for Handicrafts and Popular Arts; Latin American Studies Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador; Andean Institute of Popular Arts of the Andrés Bello Agreement; Directorate of Education and Popular Culture of the Municipality of Quito; National Radio of Ecuador; Otavalo Institute of Anthropology; and, in addition to the aforementioned, the University of Nariño, Colombia.
