Abstract

This article analyses the Orthography of the Spanish Language (1999), a pan-Hispanic compendium of the Association of Academies and the Royal Spanish Academy. This text, the result of a collaborative effort under the direction of Víctor García de la Concha, offers an exhaustive approach to the Spanish orthographic system. It examines the most relevant changes, such as the unification of the nomenclature of letters and the elimination of the diacritical accent on "solo" and demonstrative pronouns. It also addresses the controversies generated by the suppression of historical letters and the adaptation of foreign words. This work reflects the complexity and tensions in orthographic standardization over time and its impact on the Spanish language.
