Abstract

The journal Sarance, the official publication of the Otavaleño Institute of Anthropology (IOA), presents a new edition that brings together recent research within the field of social sciences, with particular attention to the Otavalo region. The published articles address diverse perspectives on ethnicity, identity, and contemporary cultural processes, reinforcing the IOA’s commitment to both regional and national scientific production. Among the notable contributions, José Almeida Vinueza examines ethnicity as a key component of contemporary urban processes, while Reneé Minnaar analyzes the interaction between ethnic identity and the appropriation of external cultural elements by the Indigenous peoples of Otavalo. Meanwhile, José Echeverría Almeida, in his article “I Am a Grain of Corn Cast into the Chaquiüán”, explores the metaphors present in Indigenous and peasant discourses, offering a profound insight into the inner and symbolic experience of local communities. Collectively, these articles highlight the cultural and anthropological richness of Otavalo, as well as the significance of its social dynamics within the broader context of contemporary Latin American studies.
