Abstract

The Ecuadorian House of Culture (CCE), founded in 1944 and governed by the National Culture Law of 1974, acts as an executive, guiding, and preserving institute for national culture, possessing legal status and autonomy. Its recent cultural policies focus on the promotion and democratization of culture, extending its reach beyond elites to the urban and rural majorities. The CCE is structured into directorial, executive, advisory, support, and operative levels. Its National Division of Cultural Heritage has advanced artistic restoration, asset registration, and the creation of an archaeological map. The Cultural Promotion Division has revitalized theater, established the National Theater Company, oriented the Ballet School towards folk dances, and modernized the Radio Broadcaster. The itinerant Cultural Caravans are notable, being a "very significant effort" that brings various artistic expressions to underserved areas. The Editorial Department maintains key collections, such as the Basic Collection of Ecuadorian Writers. As a result of this cultural extension policy, permanent Rural Culture Commissions have been established in various provinces, each provided with a public library.
