Abstract

This article explores the implications of time and space in the study of Andean popular cultures, questioning the separation between ethnology/ethnography and history that characterized Lévi-Strauss's structuralism. Through a critical analysis, it is argued that Lévi-Strauss's synchronic approach, by subordinating history to structure, entails a dehumanization and detemporalization of the cultures studied, treating them as isolated and static entities. The article argues for a methodological integration that contemplates both the present and the past, and suggests that a historical and contextualized approach is crucial to understanding the richness and complexity of Andean popular cultures. Through concrete examples, such as festivals and popular religiosity, the need for an anthropology that recognizes and analyzes the continuities and ruptures in cultural practices is demonstrated, going beyond mere synchronic observation to capture the historical and social dynamics of these communities.
