Abstract

This article examines the festival of the bread dolls in the village of San Pedro de Jongovito, located on the slopes of the Galeras Volcano, in the Nariño plateau. It addresses the cultural syncretism between indigenous agrarian traditions and colonial religious and social impositions, highlighting how agrarian festivities, in their synchrony with the sowing and harvest cycles, maintain and transform the economic, social and cultural structures of the community. Through the analysis of key roles, such as the party-goers, castilleros and pendoneros, the article reveals how these actors facilitate the redistribution of wealth and social cohesion, perpetuating ancestral practices in a context of continuous reinvention. The festival of the bread dolls, although influenced by the Catholic Church, continues to be a space for reaffirming community identity and the dynamics of exchange that underlie the daily life of Jongovito.
