Abstract

This article examines the rise of Protestant and evangelical missionary sects in Latin America since the mid-1960s, with special attention to their impact on indigenous and rural populations. It analyses how these sects, mostly of American origin, have achieved significant growth in countries such as Guatemala, Brazil and Ecuador, through strategies that combine the dissemination of the gospel with the provision of basic services such as education and health care. The internal diversity of missionary Protestantism and its lack of unity contrast with its success in attracting economically disadvantaged sectors, offering a religious alternative in a context of weakening of the Catholic Church and increasing secularization. The study highlights the role of these sects as catalysts for social and political transformation, revaluing the culture and identity of traditionally marginalized communities. Thus, these new forms of religiosity are positioned as significant forces in the Latin American religious landscape.
