Abstract

This article addresses the controversy surrounding chronology and cultural contacts in the Northern Sierra of Ecuador, in response to the work of Thomas P. Myers and J. Stephen Athens. Myers, by comparing pottery from Lake San Pablo with that from Valdivia and Machalilla, has proposed early dates for pottery from the Northern Sierra, suggesting significant contacts with the Ecuadorian Coast during the Early Formative period. On the other hand, the Espejo pottery, according to Myers, would indicate an extensive exchange system between the Coast and the Sierra. Our recent research at the site of Tababuela (northern Imbabura) provides additional evidence relevant to this discussion. Although we do not resolve all the debated issues, the Tababuela finds contribute significantly to the understanding of chronology and cultural interactions in the region. The information obtained offers a new context for evaluating Myers' and Athens' theories on prehistoric ceramic contacts.
