Abstract

This article examines the social functions of the Quechua language in the Otavalo-Cotacachi area, highlighting the complexity of the concept of linguistic unity among Andean Quechua speakers. Through a critical analysis of the literature and previous studies, the dichotomy between the traditional vision of a unified Quechua language and the reality of a linguistic family with remarkable dialectal diversity is addressed. The article argues that the appreciation of the Quechua language must go beyond its simple categorization as a linguistic unit, considering its role in diverse social and political contexts. It emphasizes that dialectal differences within Quechua are crucial to understanding its functionality in education, communication, and other spheres of social life in the region. Finally, it is suggested that any language policy must recognize and address these variations to be effective.
