Abstract

March 10, 1994 marks the centenary of the death of Dr. Miguel Egas Cabezas, a prominent Otavalo native whose life and legacy have been little recognized until now. Born in Otavalo in 1823 and died in Quito in 1894, Egas Cabezas was a physician, teacher, scientist, humanist and influential politician. He stood out as a professor at the Universidad Central and the Polytechnic School of Ecuador, and held important positions such as Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the Universidad Central. Founder of the Ecuadorian Academy of Language and the Society of Practical Medicine, he also played a crucial role in the reconstruction of Imbabura after the earthquake of 1868. His life and work, marked by a profound dedication to public service and education, deserve to be remembered and valued in the context of national history.
