Abstract

This preliminary analysis examines the lithic materials from site CHM-1, located in Chimborazo Province, Ecuador, as part of the Paleoindian Formative Project. The site, situated at 3,240 meters above sea level in a subparamo desert environment, yielded 586 lithic artifacts, predominantly quartzite (47.61%) and chalcedony. The collection includes a significant number of flakes (36%) and a variety of tools such as denticulates, scrapers, and blades, with minimal bifacial pieces. The tools show signs of use on soft materials, suggesting a focus on precision work. Despite similarities to preceramic sites in southern Ecuador, no definitive chronological correlation has been established. The study highlights the site's unique lithic assemblage and its potential connection to broader Andean lithic traditions. Future research will aim to clarify the site's temporal context and its role in the regional lithic tradition, emphasizing the need for further exploration of Andean lithic technology.
