Abstract

This article explores the importance of traditional medicine in the Otavalo canton, with a particular focus on the Yachac of the Ilumán parish. Throughout the study, it examines how traditional medicine is not only kept alive, but remains a relevant practice for both indigenous people, mestizos and whites in the region. The reasons behind the significant development of traditional medicine in Ilumán are analyzed, including geographical, cultural and social factors. The Yachac, defined as “those who know,” are not mere healers, but key figures in the preservation and transmission of Andean traditions, playing crucial ritual, cultural and social roles. The article also addresses the methodological difficulties encountered during the research and highlights how traditional Andean medicine has become a respected alternative to the modern medical system, attracting patients from diverse regions.
