Abstract

This article explores the impact of the Instituto Andino de Artes Populares (IAAP) in promoting popular theatre in Ecuador, in the context of a regional network of countries seeking to strengthen popular culture through decentralization and community self-management. The work of the Centros de Trabajo de Cultura Popular (Centres of Work for Popular Culture) in key regions of the country, such as Puyo and Tena, is examined, highlighting their contribution to the formation of theatre groups, the training of actors and collective creation. The article proposes a new methodology for the study of popular theatre, focusing on the integration of cultural and social theories to redefine the phenomenon beyond traditional conceptions. Contemporary approaches such as folklorism, communicational and political populism are reviewed, and an interdisciplinary perspective is advocated that allows for a deeper understanding of popular theatre. Finally, it is argued that popular theatre must be understood as a hybrid and dynamic phenomenon, which reflects the cultural and social diversity of Latin America and requires continuous theoretical and practical renewal.
