Abstract

This article examines the relationship between nomenclature and mestizaje in the context of Otavalo, focusing on how these dynamics have influenced the identity and development of the town. Through a historical and philosophical analysis, the contributions of various generations of Otavaleños are explored, from the corregidors to contemporary figures who have left a significant mark on local and national culture. The role of the Liga de Cultura "José Vasconcelos" and its influence on cultural modernization is addressed, as well as the contribution of the Otavalean "intelligenzia" in education, journalism, and poetry. The article also highlights the impact of traditional clubs and the tourist movement initiated by the Ñuca Huasi group in the valorization of heritage. Finally, the recent generation of the Instituto Otavaleño de Antropología and its role in the redefinition of the Otavalean identity is reflected upon, underlining the continued commitment to culture and the development of the town.
