Abstract

Ikat, a dyeing technique used to create decorative patterns by reserving specific areas of the warp and/or weft, has had a significant presence in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador. In the indigenous communities of Paniquinldra, La Magdalena and Rumipamba Grande in the Ibarra canton, this technique is still used in the ornamentation of ponchos for daily use. Although in other areas of the province the use of ikat has decreased, some textiles such as the "llama ponchos" of Corpus Christi in Natabuela and the "granizo ponchos" in Imantag are still found in ceremonial events. The interest of young weavers in revitalizing this traditional technique suggests an opportunity to diversify the textile products of the region. The recovery of ikat should not only preserve cultural identity, but also respond to the demands of the current market, thus allowing the creation of new sources of work and the revitalization of Otavaleño crafts.
