Abstract
Based on an extensive analysis of the writings of the scholars of the pre-Hispanic societies of the central highlands of Ecuador, the characteristics of what were the free ayllus of the Chimbo ethnic group are reconstructed, who were united by the Incas, who would have used them politically. The importance given by the Incas to the Chimbo territories testifies to their economic, military and political relevance. That same assessment is the one that prevails with the arrival of the Spaniards, who will establish their political-administrative dominance in the area. The documentation collected and studied allows us to reconstruct this evolution, in demographic and political terms, as well as to provide some elements of an economic and military nature.
